- 1Adam and his wife Eve had relations, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have gotten a man from the LORD."
- 2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel became a shepherd, and Cain became a farmer.
- 3When harvest time came, Cain brought some of his crops as an offering to the LORD.
- 4Abel also brought an offering — the best parts of the firstborn animals from his flock. The LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering,
- 5but he was not pleased with Cain and his offering. This made Cain furious, and his face fell.
- 6The LORD said to Cain, "Why are you so angry? Why do you look so down?
- 7If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you don't do what is right, sin is waiting at your door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.
- 8Cain spoke to his brother Abel, and while they were in the field, Cain attacked Abel and killed him.
- 9The LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" Cain answered, "I don't know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
- 10The LORD said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground.
- 11You are now cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
- 12When you farm the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.
- 13Cain said to the LORD, "This punishment is too much to bear.
- 14You are driving me out today from the face of the earth and away from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me.
- 15But the LORD said, "Whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
- 16So Cain left the LORD's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
- 17Cain and his wife had a son named Enoch. Cain was building a city at the time and named it after his son.
- 18Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad had a son named Mehujael. Mehujael had a son named Methushael. Methushael had a son named Lamech.
- 19Lamech married two women — Adah and Zillah.
- 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the ancestor of those who live in tents and have livestock.
- 21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the ancestor of all who play the harp and organ.
- 22Zillah gave birth to Tubal-Cain, who was an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain had a sister named Naamah.
- 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have killed a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt."
- 24If Cain is avenged seven times over, then I will be avenged seventy-seven times."
- 25Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth. She said, "God has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain killed."
- 26Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time, people began to call on the name of the LORD.
