1. 1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
2. 2She ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple — the one Jesus loved — and told them, "They've taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they've put him!"
3. 3So Peter and the other disciple went out toward the tomb.
4. 4They both ran together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5. 5He bent down and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn't go in.
6. 6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there,
7. 7and the cloth that had been around his head, not lying with the linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself.
8. 8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in. He saw and believed.
9. 9For they still did not understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.
10. 10Then the disciples went back to their own homes.
11. 11But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she bent down and looked into the tomb.
12. 12She saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain — one at the head and one at the feet.
13. 13They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they've put him."
14. 14After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she didn't know it was Jesus.
15. 15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you put him, and I will take him away."
16. 16Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him, "Rabboni!" — which means "Teacher."
17. 17Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
18. 18Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what he had said to her.
19. 19That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors shut because they feared the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood in the middle of them and said, "Peace be to you."
20. 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21. 21Jesus said to them again, "Peace be to you. As my Father has sent me, so I am sending you."
22. 22And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
23. 23If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven them. If you retain anyone's sins, they are retained."
24. 24Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."
26. 26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be to you."
27. 27Then he said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here and look at my hands. Reach your hand here and put it into my side. Do not be faithless, but believing."
28. 28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"
29. 29Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
30. 30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.
31. 31But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life through his name.
