  1. 1Jesus left that area and went to his hometown, and his disciples went with him.
  2. 2When the Sabbath came, he began teaching in the synagogue. Many who heard him were stunned. "Where did he learn all this?" they asked. "What kind of wisdom has he been given? How is he performing such incredible miracles?"
  3. 3Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him.
  4. 4But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown, among his own relatives, and in his own house."
  5. 5He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.
  6. 6He was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around to the surrounding villages, teaching as he went.
  7. 7He called the twelve to him and began sending them out in pairs, giving them power over unclean spirits.
  8. 8He told them to take nothing for the journey except a walking stick — no food, no bag, no money in their belts.
  9. 9They could wear sandals but not pack an extra set of clothes.
  10. 10He also told them, "When you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.
  11. 11“Whoever does not receive you or hear you, when you leave that place, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Truly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.”
  12. 12So they went out and preached that people should repent.
  13. 13They drove out many demons, anointed many sick people with oil, and healed them.
  14. 14King Herod heard about all of this, because Jesus' name had become widely known. Herod said, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead! That's why these miraculous powers are at work in him."
  15. 15Others said, 'He is Elijah.' And others said, 'He is a prophet, like one of the prophets.'
  16. 16But when Herod heard the reports, he said, "It's John — the one I beheaded. He's come back from the dead."
  17. 17Herod himself had ordered John's arrest and had him bound in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.
  18. 18John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
  19. 19Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not.
  20. 20For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept watch over him. When he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
  21. 21When an opportune day came, Herod held a supper on his birthday for his lords, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.
  22. 22During the celebration, Herodias's daughter came in and danced, delighting Herod and all his guests. The king told the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."
  23. 23He even swore an oath to her: "Whatever you ask, I'll give it to you — up to half my kingdom."
  24. 24She stepped out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother answered, "The head of John the Baptist."
  25. 25The girl rushed back to the king and said, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter — right now."
  26. 26The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oath and his dinner guests, he didn't want to refuse her.
  27. 27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The soldier went to the prison and beheaded him.
  28. 28He brought the head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
  29. 29When John's disciples heard what had happened, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
  30. 30And the apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.
  31. 31He said to them, "Come away with me to a quiet place and get some rest." People were constantly coming and going, and they didn't even have time to eat.
  32. 32So they got in a boat and headed to a remote area by themselves.
  33. 33But people saw them leaving and recognized them. Crowds from every nearby town ran ahead on foot and arrived before them.
  34. 34When Jesus stepped ashore and saw the large crowd, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
  35. 35Late in the afternoon, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's getting very late.
  36. 36Send the people away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat. They have no food."
  37. 37But Jesus replied, "You feed them." They asked him, "Should we go and spend 200 denarii on bread to feed them?"
  38. 38He asked them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five loaves and two fish."
  39. 39Jesus told them to have everyone sit down in groups on the green grass.
  40. 40So the people sat down in rows, in groups of one hundred and groups of fifty.
  41. 41When he had taken the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and he divided the two fish among them all.
  42. 42Everyone ate and had their fill.
  43. 43They took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fish.
  44. 44And those who ate of the loaves were about five thousand men.
  45. 45Right away, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to Bethsaida on the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
  46. 46After saying goodbye to the people, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
  47. 47When evening came, the boat was out in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land.
  48. 48He could see them straining at the oars because the wind was against them. Around the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the water. He was about to pass by them,
  49. 49but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a spirit and cried out.
  50. 50They all saw him and were terrified. But he immediately called out to them, "Take courage! It's me. Don't be afraid."
  51. 51He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely stunned,
  52. 52because they did not understand the miracle of the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
  53. 53They crossed the lake and landed at Gennesaret, pulling the boat up to shore.
  54. 54The moment they stepped out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.
  55. 55They ran throughout the entire region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
  56. 56Everywhere he went — villages, cities, or countryside — people laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him to let them touch even the edge of his clothing. And everyone who touched him was healed.
