1. 1The record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2. 2Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3. 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram.
4. 4Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5. 5Salmon was the father of Booz by Rachab, and Booz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed was the father of Jesse.
6. 6Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.
7. 7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. Abijah was the father of Asa.
8. 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram. Joram was the father of Uzziah.
9. 9Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10. 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah.
11. 11Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, around the time they were carried away to Babylon.
12. 12After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13. 13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14. 14Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Achim. Achim was the father of Eliud.
15. 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16. 16Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called Christ.
17. 17So there were 14 generations from Abraham to David, 14 generations from David to the exile in Babylon, and 14 generations from the exile in Babylon to Christ.
18. 18Here is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
19. 19Then Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to make her a public example, intended to divorce her privately.
20. 20But while he thought about these things, look, the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary, your wife, to yourself, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
21. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
22. 22All of this happened to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:
23. 23"The virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" — which means "God with us."
24. 24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had told him and took Mary as his wife.
25. 25But he did not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
