  1. 1Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived in Bethany, where Lazarus lived — the man he had raised from the dead.
  2. 2They prepared a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him.
  3. 3Then Mary took about a pound of very expensive perfume made from pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped his feet with her hair. The fragrance of the perfume filled the entire house.
  4. 4But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon — the one who would later betray him — said,
  5. 5"Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"
  6. 6He didn't say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He kept the money bag and would help himself to what was put into it.
  7. 7Then Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept this for the day of my burial."
  8. 8"You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."
  9. 9A large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, and they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
  10. 10So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,
  11. 11because on account of him many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.
  12. 12The next day, the large crowd that had come for the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.
  13. 13They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the King of Israel, who comes in the name of the Lord!"
  14. 14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written:
  15. 15"Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your King is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
  16. 16His disciples did not understand these things at first. But after Jesus was glorified, they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
  17. 17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify about it.
  18. 18That was also why the crowd went out to meet him — they had heard that he had performed this miracle.
  19. 19So the Pharisees said among themselves, "You see that you are gaining nothing! Look — the whole world has gone after him!"
  20. 20Now there were some Greeks among those who had come up to worship at the feast.
  21. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we want to see Jesus."
  22. 22Philip went and told Andrew, and then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
  23. 23Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."
  24. 24"Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it produces much fruit."
  25. 25"Whoever loves his life will lose it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life."
  26. 26"If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him."
  27. 27"Now my soul is troubled. And what shall I say — 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this very reason I came to this hour."
  28. 28"Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."
  29. 29The crowd standing nearby heard it. Some said it had thundered. Others said, "An angel spoke to him."
  30. 30Jesus answered, "This voice did not come for my sake, but for yours."
  31. 31"Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out."
  32. 32"And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."
  33. 33He said this to indicate what kind of death he was going to die.
  34. 34The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. So how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"
  35. 35Then Jesus said to them, "The light is with you for just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness does not overtake you. Whoever walks in darkness does not know where he is going."
  36. 36"While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light." After saying these things, Jesus departed and hid himself from them.
  37. 37Even though he had performed so many miracles before them, they still did not believe in him,
  38. 38so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
  39. 39For this reason they could not believe, because Isaiah also said:
  40. 40"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they would not see with their eyes or understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them."
  41. 41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him.
  42. 42Nevertheless, even among the rulers, many believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, for fear of being put out of the synagogue.
  43. 43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
  44. 44Jesus cried out and said, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me."
  45. 45"And whoever sees me sees the one who sent me."
  46. 46"I have come as a light into the world, so that whoever believes in me should not remain in darkness."
  47. 47"If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world."
  48. 48"Whoever rejects me and does not receive my words has one who judges him: the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day."
  49. 49"For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has given me a commandment — what to say and what to speak."
  50. 50"And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So whatever I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me."
