- 1And he told them a parable to show that people should always pray and not lose heart;
- 2He said, "There was a judge in a certain city who didn't fear God and didn't care what anyone thought of him.
- 3A widow in that city came to him, saying, 'Avenge me against my adversary.'
- 4For a long time the judge refused. But eventually he said to himself, 'I don't fear God, and I don't care about people's opinions.
- 5But this widow keeps bothering me. I'm going to give her justice, or she'll wear me out with her constant visits.'"
- 6Then the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge said."
- 7And will not God bring justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night, even though he is patient with them?
- 8I tell you, he will bring them justice quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
- 9Jesus also told this parable to some people who were confident in their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else.
- 10"Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector.
- 11The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.'
- 12"I fast twice a week, and I give a tenth of all that I possess."
- 13But the tax collector stood at a distance. He wouldn't even look up toward heaven. Instead, he beat his chest and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
- 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
- 15People were bringing their babies to Jesus so he could touch them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked the people.
- 16But Jesus called them to himself and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
- 17I tell you the truth: anyone who doesn't receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
- 18A certain ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
- 19Jesus replied, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone."
- 20You know the commandments: 'Don't commit adultery,' 'Don't murder,' 'Don't steal,' 'Don't give false testimony,' 'Honor your father and mother.'"
- 21The man said, "I've kept all of these since I was young."
- 22When Jesus heard this, he told him, "There's still one thing you're missing. Sell everything you own and give the money to the poor. You'll have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me."
- 23When the man heard this, he became deeply sad, because he was extremely wealthy.
- 24Jesus saw how sad he was and said, "How hard it is for rich people to enter the kingdom of God!
- 25“For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
- 26The people who heard it asked, "Who then can be saved?"
- 27Jesus answered, "What is impossible for people is possible with God."
- 28Peter spoke up and said, "We've left everything behind to follow you."
- 29Jesus told them, "I tell you the truth: anyone who has left home, wife, brothers, parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God
- 30will receive many times more in this life, and in the age to come, eternal life."
- 31Jesus pulled the 12 disciples aside and told them, "Listen — we're going up to Jerusalem, and everything the prophets wrote about the Son of Man is about to come true.
- 32He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him, and spit on him.
- 33They will whip him and kill him. But on the third day, he will rise again.
- 34The disciples didn't understand any of this. The meaning was hidden from them, and they couldn't grasp what he was talking about.
- 35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting beside the road, begging.
- 36When the blind man heard a crowd passing by, he asked what was going on.
- 37They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is coming through."
- 38He shouted, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
- 39The people at the front of the crowd told him to be quiet, but he shouted even louder, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
- 40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When the man came close, Jesus asked him,
- 41"What do you want me to do for you?" He answered, "Lord, I want to see again."
- 42Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you."
- 43Instantly the man could see. He followed Jesus, praising God. And when all the people saw what happened, they praised God too.
