- 1And you were made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
- 2Back then, you lived the way the world lives, following the prince who rules the power of the air — the spirit that is still at work in the children of disobedience.
- 3In the past, we all lived among them too, giving in to the cravings of our flesh and doing what our flesh and mind desired. By nature we were children of wrath, just like the rest.
- 4But God is rich in mercy, and his love for us is so great
- 5that even when we were dead in our sins, he made us alive together with Christ. It is by grace that you have been saved.
- 6He raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
- 7so that for all the ages to come, he could display the overwhelming richness of his grace through his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
- 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this didn't come from you. It is the gift of God,
- 9not of works, so that no one can boast.
- 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
- 11So remember this: you used to be Gentiles by birth, called 'the uncircumcised' by those who call themselves 'the circumcised' in the flesh made by hands.
- 12In those days you were cut off from Christ, excluded from the community of Israel, and had no part in the covenants God had promised. You lived in this world without hope and without God.
- 13But now, in Christ Jesus, you who were once so far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
- 14For he is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the dividing wall between us;
- 15in his flesh he did away with the hostility — that is, the law with its commands and rules. He did this so that in himself he could make the two into one new man, and so make peace.
- 16Through the cross, he reconciled both groups to God in one body, putting that hostility to death.
- 17He came and preached peace to you who were far away and to those who were near.
- 18Through him, both groups now have access to the Father by one Spirit.
- 19So you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
- 20built on the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
- 21In him, the whole structure is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
- 22In him, you too are being built together into a place where God lives by his Spirit.
