  1. 1After saying all this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. There was a garden on the other side, and he and his disciples went into it.
  2. 2Judas, his betrayer, knew the place because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
  3. 3So Judas arrived there with a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
  4. 4Jesus, fully aware of everything that was about to happen to him, stepped forward and asked them, "Who are you looking for?"
  5. 5"Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. Jesus told them, "I am he." Judas, the one betraying him, was standing right there with them.
  6. 6The moment Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
  7. 7So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
  8. 8Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."
  9. 9This happened to fulfill what he had said: "Of those you gave me, I have not lost one."
  10. 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
  11. 11Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back in its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup that my Father has given me?"
  12. 12Then the detachment of soldiers, their commander, and the Jewish officers seized Jesus and bound him.
  13. 13They brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
  14. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die for the people.
  15. 15Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was known to the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
  16. 16But Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
  17. 17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, "Aren't you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."
  18. 18The servants and officers had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they stood around it warming themselves. Peter also stood with them, warming himself.
  19. 19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
  20. 20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews gather. I said nothing in secret."
  21. 21"Why are you asking me? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said."
  22. 22When Jesus said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck him with his hand and said, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"
  23. 23Jesus replied, "If I said something wrong, testify about what was wrong. But if I spoke rightly, why do you strike me?"
  24. 24Annas then sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
  25. 25Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. They asked him, "Aren't you also one of his disciples?" He denied it and said, "I am not."
  26. 26One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"
  27. 27Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
  28. 28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.
  29. 29So Pilate went out to them and asked, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"
  30. 30They answered him, "If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."
  31. 31Pilate told them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death."
  32. 32This happened so that the word Jesus had spoken would be fulfilled, indicating what kind of death he was going to die.
  33. 33Pilate went back into the headquarters, called for Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
  34. 34Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about me?"
  35. 35Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?"
  36. 36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from here."
  37. 37Pilate said to him, "So you are a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth hears my voice."
  38. 38Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" After saying this, he went back out to the Jews and told them, "I find no fault in him at all."
  39. 39"But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?"
  40. 40They all cried out again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
